The Road to War (The End of an Empire)
"The Road to War" uses elaborate re-enactments, fascinating Computer Generated Imagery and previously unseen archive footage to examine how the assassination in Sarajevo in 1914 came about and how Austria-Hungary used the death of the heir to the throne, Franz Ferdinand, to start a war against Serbia. The film investigates how this regional conflict caused the Central Powers and the Triple Entente to enter the First World War - at the time, the biggest war in history with 17 million soldiers and civilians killed and more than 20 million injured.

Heroes of the Somme
The Documentary uses original archive from the Western Front to uncover the stories of seven of the men whose remarkable bravery won them the Victoria Cross, Britain's most prized military medal. The WWI Somme offensive lasted 141 days and involved 13 Allied nations fighting 14 separate battles. Day One of the battle, 1 July 1916, was the worst in British military history with 60,000 casualties. By the end of the offensive the total for both sides was a million. This extraordinary sacrifice was made for just six miles of empty farmland. Of roughly a million British and Dominion troops who fought on the Somme, just 51 were awarded the Victoria Cross. In this programme, military historian Dr Gavin Hughes travels to France to piece together the stories of seven of them. Their experiences, covering four key days of the battle, tell the story of the entire offensive. Gavin uses a copy of a 100-year-old battle map to navigate the Somme landscape today, using the map to pinpoint the locations of individuals and the battalions they fought in. The VC winners featured came from England, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and New Zealand. These men came from every rank and social background. The programme features contributions from leading historians, who explain the broader context of the battle and describe how the offensive has come to be remembered, rightly or wrongly, as a exercise in futile military sacrifice.

I Was There: The Great War Interviews
Using never-before-seen interview footage with soldiers and civilians, illuminates the personal experience of the Great War, through the eyes of those who survived it.
In the early 1960s, the BBC interviewed close to 300 eye-witnesses of the First World War for the landmark series The Great War. But only a tiny fraction of the recorded interviews made it to air. The film negatives were preserved by the Imperial War Museum and 50 years after they were filmed, this programme presents the very best of the original interview material. Most of it has never been broadcast before.
I Was There is a moving tribute to the human face of war - from the horrors of artillery bombardment and the anguish of young men forced to become killers, to fleeting outbreaks of peace on the battlefield, and the heart-breaking stories of the women on the home front who feared for those closest to them.
This is the Great War as visceral, lived reality, with eyewitnesses still spry, alert and passionate. It is the closest we’ll ever get to what it was really like for those who were there.

The First World War
It wiped out ten million people heralded the birth of modern warfare and engendered mass destruction on a scale never before known in human history. Dubbed "the war to end all wars" it was directly responsible for the outbreak of fresh international conflict barely twenty years later. Yet in terms of intelligent contemporary examination World War I is constantly placed second behind World War II. As the last veterans pass away this definitive ten-part series offers insight and analysis to provide a coherent and strategic military narrative. Based on new and authoritative accounts this stylistically innovative series from acclaimed documentary filmmaker Jonathan Lewis (Before Hindsight Stalin People's Century) places World War I in its proper global context and explodes conventional myths with the human tragedy placed into a wider political and military context beyond the Western Front.

The Somme From Defeat to Victory
Drama-documentary which offers a new perspective on the most infamous battle of World War I, revealing how it was on the Somme that the British Army learnt to fight a modern war. The Battle of the Somme (French: Bataille de la Somme, German: Sommeschlacht), also known as the Somme Offensive, took place during the First World War between 1 July and 18 November 1916 in the Somme department, on either side of the river Somme. The battle consisted of an offensive by the British and French armies against the German Army, which, since invading France in August 1914, had occupied large areas of the country. The Battle of the Somme was one of the largest battles of the war; by the time fighting paused in late autumn 1916 the forces involved had suffered more than 1 million casualties, making it one of the bloodiest military operations ever recorded.
