Taking Fire
Taking Fire is war as never seen before. A handful of rookies and their leaders from 101st Airborne Division packed personal helmet cameras with their standard issue kit and flew out for a year's deployment in Afghanistan. For them, 2010 would be spent in America's farthest flung outpost in the Korangal, deep in Taliban-held country. Excited and nervous, the rookies wanted to capture what they saw to show the folks back home. The footage they brought back charts an extraordinary first-eye view of modern warfare in one of the deadliest places on earth. Their combat footage plunges viewers into the heart of the action, giving a visceral experience not captured by news reports or traditional documentaries. Deeper still, their unmediated rushes reveal personal struggles with the dilemmas, confusions, joys and sorrows of war. The men leave the States seeking adventure, inspired to serve their country. What they experience in Afghanistan changes them forever. In flashes forward to their lives six years on, the men reflect on their year in the Korangal. Now, with their partners who waited anxiously for the safe return of their sweethearts, our soldiers reunite. For some, it's their chance to lay old ghosts to rest.

A Very British Deterrent
With Trident renewed for another generation, A Very British Deterrent tells the story of the remarkable events, eye-watering costs, power relationships and secret deals done half a century ago to secure Britain's very first submarine-launched nuclear missiles.
In today's turbulent world, it is a story that is more relevant than ever. At the height of the Cold War, a series of political and technical crises came close to leaving Britain without a nuclear weapon of its own. In a time of unprecedented international tension and with the world locked in a terrifying nuclear arms race, one small loch in Scotland became a crucial bargaining chip to keep Britain in the nuclear game.
Using the personal letters of prime ministers and presidents, eye-witness accounts and once-secret documents, this film explores how the British prime minister Harold Macmillan seized every opportunity to further Britain's nuclear ambitions, was prepared to trade a Scottish base for a new American weapon, and even jeopardised the crucial Anglo-American relationship to keep Britain an independent nuclear power.

Heroes of the Somme
The Documentary uses original archive from the Western Front to uncover the stories of seven of the men whose remarkable bravery won them the Victoria Cross, Britain's most prized military medal. The WWI Somme offensive lasted 141 days and involved 13 Allied nations fighting 14 separate battles. Day One of the battle, 1 July 1916, was the worst in British military history with 60,000 casualties. By the end of the offensive the total for both sides was a million. This extraordinary sacrifice was made for just six miles of empty farmland. Of roughly a million British and Dominion troops who fought on the Somme, just 51 were awarded the Victoria Cross. In this programme, military historian Dr Gavin Hughes travels to France to piece together the stories of seven of them. Their experiences, covering four key days of the battle, tell the story of the entire offensive. Gavin uses a copy of a 100-year-old battle map to navigate the Somme landscape today, using the map to pinpoint the locations of individuals and the battalions they fought in. The VC winners featured came from England, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and New Zealand. These men came from every rank and social background. The programme features contributions from leading historians, who explain the broader context of the battle and describe how the offensive has come to be remembered, rightly or wrongly, as a exercise in futile military sacrifice.

Hitler's Death Army - Das Reich
6 June 1944, D-Day.
As the Allies storm the beaches of Normandy, Hitler orders the return of the Das Reich, the infamous Panzer elite division best known for its mass murders in the Ukraine and in Belarus, based at that time in southwest of France.
Its mission: to push the Allies back into the Atlantic and turn the tide of the conflict in favor of the Germans.
The SS division, with 15,000 men and more than 200 tanks, faces relentless attacks from the Resistance as it moves north through France.
Along the way, it conducts vicious reprisals and massacres of civilians (Oradour-sur-Glane, Tulle). The film will retrace the last year of Hitler’s death squad and their crimes against humanity.
We will follow the everyday lives of these SS officers, their recruitment and training on the Eastern Front, and try to understand who exactly were these men who perpetrated the massacres.

Fritz X was the most common name for a German guided anti-ship glide bomb used during World War II. Fritz X was a nickname used both by Allied and Luftwaffe personnel. Battlefield Detectives: Pointe du Hoc
Dawn on the 6th June, 1944. The largest invasion in history is underway. Four miles to the west of the Allied landings at Omaha Beach, a flotilla of landing craft head towards Hitler’s ‘Atlantic Wall’ defences. The landing craft were carrying just 200 men, of a newly trained elite force - the United States Rangers. Their objective was the vital German coastal defence gun battery on the headland known as the Pointe du Hoc. Climbing the ninety foot cliffs under a storm of German bullets and grenades, the Rangers found that the German guns were not where they should be. What followed was a desperate game of cat and mouse, as the Rangers attempted to hunt down the guns. The story of their mission is remembered now as one of the most extraordinary aspects of the D-Day landings. How did the heavily outnumbered US Rangers take, hold and destroy the guns of Pointe du Hoc?

ARMADILLO
Director Janus Metz follows Danish soldiers fighting the Taliban in the Helmand province of southern Afghanistan with sophisticated visual artistry rarely achieved under such raw conditions. Building his film around the characters within the platoon, Metz allows us to witness how war transforms the different personalities, and the group, approaching his subjects with an intimacy equal to that of fiction. The active military base "Armadillo" houses a mix of 170 Danish and British soldiers in the ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) who are responsible for providing security to the surrounding area and eliminating the Taliban insurgency. Metz follows his subjects through an entire tour of duty, creating an unforgettable portrait of the reality of military life on the front lines. Documenting both the boredom and horror of warfare, Metz shows us the soldiers playing video games and laughing at pornography, struggling to communicate with disillusioned civilians, and killing a group of Taliban soldiers found hiding in a trench. The film avoids judgments for or against the war, and instead shows the soldiers struggling to maintain their humanity in a world filled with violence.
