D-Day Invasion: When Weather Changed History
Though the outcome of World War II was still very much in doubt in May of 1943, the Allied Expeditionary Force began drawing up plans for a full-scale invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. The Germans knew that such an attack was inevitable--but where would the invasion take place, and when? Allied meterologists had determined that the weather would be most advantageous in early June of 1944. But when heavy rains and gale-forced winds unexpectedly pummelled the coast of France on the proposed "D-Day" target date of June 5, 1944, the man in charge of the invasion, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, was forced to make the most difficult decision of his life.
